Start Building Your List from Day One

We all know how important mailing lists are, but for the benefit of new bloggers it is very essential to start building mailing lists from day one.

Picture this, somehow, someway, a first time visitor has landed on your page in order to gain some information – all well and good,
but there is no guarantee of that visitor returning.
So, the action plan here is to encourage them to subscribe to your future posts and updates.

Your Loyal Readers

As a result, you are building up a bank of visitors that are guaranteed to know whenever there are new updates on your blog.
When you contact them, chances are they would check you out.
Bare in mind, the moment your blog is launched and submitted to the search engines – traffic is on its way.
Even if the figures are low to start off with, each visitor is a potential subscriber. The process of list- building also gives you an opportunity to know them and identify their blogging needs.

Reward Them

There are several ways you can encourage your visitors to subscribe to your blog.
You may decide to offer the following:
• Free Reports
• Free Tips and Advice
• Free e-Books

On this blog, I currently offer to send Blogging tips, which I send weekly to subscribed users. It is also a way to reward them for their loyalty.

What approach have you adopted to build your list?

Sound advice. If we get more involved with our readership, they will return the favor. Blogs is all about Social Networking, its about building relationships.

“Any person who is educated is one who has learned to get whatever he wants in life without violating the rights of others. Education consists, not so much of knowledge, but of knowledge effectively and persistently applied.”

    Your blogging tools.
I am a hypocrite in a sense. I want email subscribers but I prefer to be an RSS subscriber. I just find RSS such a convenient and instant way of receiving the latest posts from people’s blogs.

My email list is very small and quite stagnant but my RSS subscriber list is growing. IO guess I should be grateful in someways that people feel my blog is worth at least RSS subscribing too.

However, I agree that an email list is important for long term monetization of a website. What to do?

    Hi Gordie,

Without a doubt, the process of RSS subscription is far easier.
In fact, my current RSS feed count is slightly greater than my email subscribers, which may indicate RSS being a popular option.

I guess it’s just a matter of preference, some may prefer to receive email notification while others such as yourself would go for the RSS option.
But I feel as bloggers, we can attempt to cater for all possible communication channels.

It also depends on reasons for having a mailing list in the first place.
For instance, I encourage visitors to signup for blogging tips and updates.
Also with an email list, there is also an opportunity for a two-way interaction.

Email is remarkably powerful form of marketing, but unfortunately most bloggers don’t realise it until it’s too late. I’ve recently been getting into e-mail marketing with the form of writing my own WordPress plugins, they’re actually a GREAT way (if you can code them) to get visitors to subscribe without having to write an ebook :)

I totally agree with you on these points. If a blogger is planning for long term career in blogging, he should work in an organised environment where he should have the list of IDs of loyal readers. Free stuff and service will definitely engage readers. Thanks for these info John.

I have heard many stories from marketeers and bloggers who wished they had starting building their mailing list from the start.
Will check your stuff out – Thanks for the comment

It is such a basic concept, but some people just don't get it. The only reason someone will subscribe to your blog is if they get something out of it. Tips, eBooks, or other products are a great way to motivate someone to subscribe.
