Plan for the Blogging Journey Ahead

Plan for the Blogging Journey Ahead

It’s the new year, a new campaign, a new challenge.
For some strange reason, it’s a time when everyone makes resolutions and sets new goals.

It’s also a time when most of us are charged up and motivated by the challenge ahead.

As we embark on this blogging journey with excitement, It is important to keep our feet on the ground and start off with a plan.

Plan the Journey

Don’t just dive head first, instead, take a moment to iron out where you’re heading – Have a strategy.
However long this may take, at the end you’ll find it to be a good investment.

So for a moment, stop blogging, get off Twitter, turn off emails – disconnect your internet connection if you have to.
Sit down and write down your goals for the year.

It has taken me a couple of days this week to streamline my goals and to have plans in place to execute them.
As a result of this, my current tasks list is close to a hundred so far.

Your goal may be to write 200 posts by the end of the year or to send x amount of tweets per month.
Whatever these goals are, have a plan in place to execute them.
For example, if your goal is to have 50 email subscribers in a given week, a typical plan could involve providing something of value in exchange for your readers’ email addresses like a contest or promotion.

Pre-Journey Check-list

You’ll find that doing this is time well spent. So be sure to;

  • Set yourself realistic goals.
  • Devise a plan that contains strategies to accomplish these goals.
  • Break up your goals into smaller chunks if you have to.
  • Make sure they are realistic, measurable, achievable and time bound.
  • Do what it takes to achieve your goals.

- Do you have a plan for the journey ahead?
- What approach have you taken?

Good post, John. This is a must for anyone wanting to get off to a good start this year, or at any point. Having a plan keeps things in focus and allows you to measure your progress.

You really made a great point about turning off the internet and getting away from all other distractions while doing this exercise. I think we all need to do this more than we generally do. I have found that taking a day off occasionally with no internet serves as an interrupt to the routine day to day stuff. I return the next day all revved up and totally refreshed.

I agree. One of the hardest problems most of us face is that we're “Do-ers” because we're entrepreneurs, and it's in our DNA to be doing stuff.

It means we often skip the planning phase and dive in to the action phase, which can be a huge mistake.

    Me too, Patty!

I think the important step for me, is breaking it all down. Until a task is figured out down to the week (sometimes day) I have no idea if it's realistic or not. Saying I'll do these 50 things this year could end up being a lot more work that it looks, and end up frustrating you. Having realistic goals is the key to being able to fulfill them.

Planning is probably the hardest part – I guess because it takes the most time, effort, and thought. It's also so scary, because once you put things down on paper, it's like your bond with yourself – then you've got to do it. Which leads to the next part: following through. I've got a list of things that I need to accomplish, but I just can't seem to check things off fast enough. But…I can't give up and quit – I think that's the point, don't give up, just keep chipping away at this list that just keeps seeming to get longer…and longer… :)

I've learnt to make plans realistic and time measurable. In the past I was so vague that I was not getting anywhere.

Well put Mike, It's definitely in our nature to be “Do-ers” – we just can't help it.
The challenge here is to find the right balance.

Great points John! I should sit down and write some goals. Some real goals. I guess I have stuff spinning in my head, but I should take time like you said to shut everything down and pull out the pencil and write them down. Ok Pencil isn't permanent maybe I should use pen. I will admit I don't tend to write my goals down. I usually just wing it, but I think I should give it a try this year. I do think it helps to stay on track :) Thanks John!

Your pre-journey checklist are extremely important. Many resolutions have failed because of its enormousness. Braking up our goals into smaller chucks is very effective. I'm applying such principle. :-)
