Steer Clear of Distractions

Posted by John Lufadeju View Comments

You may have started the year with a set of goals, but along the way, you find yourself distracted by other things i.e new plugins, services or tools.

Before you go crazy kitting your blog out, always ask yourself, ‘is this going to help me achieve the objective of this blog?’

You always have to consider if the time and effort your spending is taking you closer to achieving your goals. If they don’t help in attaining your goals – then get rid of them.

This post was inspired by a meeting I had last night with a friend, as part of a project we’re working on. During the meeting we reviewed and analyzed a few tools. And I saw just how the level of information services and tools out there are overwhelming. It’s so easy to get side tracked, whereas keeping focused and on target is the crucial to achieving set goals.
So if things don’t align with your overall goal then move on.

Your time, is your most valuable asset, once gone it can never be reclaimed.

Here’s a few questions I ask myself before getting involved with a product, service or tool.

- What is the overall objective of the product?
- How can it benefit me and my business?
- Does it help in attaining my goal?
- How long does it take to implement?

How do you deal with distractions?
Would love to hear your suggestions.

I'm a devil for being distracted and instead of checking emails every 30 minutes or so as soon as that “New Mail” icon starts to flash I'm in there! A colleague at work manages his Outlook by turning it off and logging in every hour. Maybe that's the way to do it. I've turned off the notification service on Tweetdeck for this reason

I've actually become far more ruthless with stuff like this recently, and it's benefited me greatly. I've seem to have said no to things a lot, but it's meant I've stayed focused and I'm very happy about that!

    Good reminder, John.
I have really become much more disciplined with regard to distractions. Don't get me wrong, I had my moments, but I've got the laser going now. :-)
I've learned that new gadgets and such are just like buses, you miss one and another will be coming along shortly.

  11. Ohh, I remember that Tweetdeck notification sound, I became very addicted to that actually.

I still can't bring myself to completely turn off my emails.
Even when I try, I have a little red flashing light on my blackberry telling me I have something new.

  13. I like the ruthless approach, and I don't blame you for that.
You need to be that way in order to gain some form of control.

  15. That's right Jimi, and they never stop coming…lol
I guess it's a matter of filtering out what's best for you.

  17. Oooohh distraction, one of the biggest pain in my life. I especially hate it when I am coding. I get into such a grove that often I take a few minutes to get my thoughts back and then back on track. This adds to the wasted time.
But then there are those other distractions that we give into willingly. Often I find myself spending too much time online with blogs and comments when I should really be getting this coding dine and dusted.
